LED LIGHTING - What are its advantages and disadvantages?

led

Undoubtedly LEDs have become the most popular light source. Due to the huge increase in the use of LEDs, we no longer often encounter incandescent bulbs or even CFL bulbs. The reason for the rapid increase in the use of LEDs is the multitude of advantages that they accumulate, but this does not mean that they do not have some disadvantages. We will start by analyzing the advantages of led lighting technology.

Led lighting - Advantages

Their main advantage is that they offer a very high energy efficiency in contrast to traditional incandescent bulbs. Incandescent bulbs consume more than 75% of electricity in heat and only 25% in light production. In contrast, LED light bulbs consume only 20% of heat and 80% are used to produce light.

Their second key advantage is that they are 100% ecological and safe. They do not contain zinc like CFLs. Zinc is known to be harmful to both humans and the environment, so its use is no longer recommended. In addition, LED lamps are 100% recyclable, and all their materials can be easily reused.

In terms of aesthetics, with traditional lamps we do not have special options, in terms of color. With LEDs, however, we have a variety of lighting colors, so if you like colored lights, LEDs are the best choice you have at your disposal.

Disadvantages

The main disadvantage of led lamps is their initial purchase cost. The price for a common incandescent lamp ranges from a few cents to a few euros, while at the same time their production is now banned by European law. On the contrary, led bulbs start at 15 euros and reach very high prices. As a general rule, led bulbs are 8 to 20 times more expensive. Of course in the long run you will save a lot, since they have very low consumption and have a very long lifespan (10+ years).

Another disadvantage, which is not widely known, is that they are quite sensitive to heat. Although they themselves produce minimal heat they are very good conductors. Exposure to high heat reduces their efficiency and lifespan. For the above reason their use in areas with high temperature is not recommended.

Undoubtedly, LED lighting technology is the future of lighting and within the next decade they will have replaced the traditional light bulbs we have known for so many years.
